Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
Staff and faculty meet regularly to discuss and lead the school in efforts to expand diversity in our students and faculty/staff, value each member of the community and provide equal access and opportunity, and to be inclusive in our actions and communications.
Principles of Diversity in our Curriculum
Students in humanities and arts classes draw on resources from a wide variety of cultures in such a way that it allows them to better understand cultural identity.
Faculty guide students to develop a more complex understanding of what shapes their own attitudes and beliefs, where their own cultural traditions originated, and how they interrelate with other traditions.
Faculty guide students to explore both the diversity and commonality of experience in this society. Students learn to integrate these differing perspectives, histories and socioeconomic experiences into broader interpretations of the differences and commonalities that exist together in our country.
Students are required to participate in settings outside of the school where they have the opportunity to learn about and reflect on the experiences of different communities in our region.
Dialogue among the students about their own experiences is encouraged as a way of personalizing the understanding of differences and commonalities and as a way of fostering a habit of inquiry, rather than assumption. Opportunities for international travel, study and reflection are built into the curriculum.
Student Diversity Club
This club consists of an array of different ways of looking at diversity. To explore cultures through media, food and values, we will watch films, shows, and read articles, all of which we will discuss afterwards. Twice a month someone will bring in a dish from another culture, and share its background. We will attend conferences and events, make trips to the Mission District, create art projects that display different areas of diversity, take a closer look at cultural changes throughout time, as well as discuss issues surrounding diversity in the workplace, schools, and communities.
